The Day ChatGPT Traffic “Disappeared” From Analytics, and Where It Went

Why ChatGPT traffic disappeared from analytics: an analytics dashboard where a glowing orange traffic line breaks into scattered dots, with a magnifying glass over them

Short Answer: Why did ChatGPT referral traffic drop in October 2026?

Since about October 9, many ChatGPT links appear to be reaching websites without the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag, and sometimes without a referrer, so analytics files those visits as Direct instead of ChatGPT. Analysts disagree on the exact mechanism, OpenAI has not commented in the reporting we reviewed, and one analyst says sources suggest it may be a bug. The visits may be hidden rather than lost, but that is an inference.

Quick Summary

  • Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 14 that ChatGPT seems to have removed or replaced the UTM parameters it adds to outbound links, starting around the GPT-6 rollout.
  • Profound says the share of ChatGPT answers with at least one tagged source link fell from about 98% on October 8 to 66% by October 14, while Intelligent UI rose from 2% to about 35% of the answers it collected.
  • Adobe’s Cedric Huesler found that on about 500 pages where ChatGPT drove 5% or more of visits, ChatGPT-attributed visits fell about 31,000 a day while Direct rose about 26,000 a day.
  • The explanations differ. Profound points to how Intelligent UI renders links. Huesler points to how GPT-6 opens them. Neither is confirmed by OpenAI.
  • Huesler added an update on October 14 saying sources told him this might be a bug, and he will update his post. Treat the cause and any fix as unconfirmed.

Marketers started noticing the change over the past several days. Users began asking on X whether UTM parameters had disappeared from ChatGPT links after the GPT-6 update, Adobe’s Huesler shared an analysis on LinkedIn, and Search Engine Roundtable and Profound published their findings on October 14. GPT-6 and its Intelligent UI began rolling out on October 7 for paid plans and October 8 for Free and Go.

What Changed With ChatGPT’s UTM Tags?

A UTM parameter is a small tag added to the end of a link. When ChatGPT links to a site, the tag utm_source=chatgpt.com tells an analytics tool that the visit came from ChatGPT. Search Engine Roundtable reported in June 2025 that OpenAI had added UTM parameters to links in the “More” section, which previously had none, while citation links already carried them.

The reports now describe the opposite change. Barry Schwartz wrote that the tags seem to have been removed or replaced beginning with the GPT-6 release about a week earlier, and that OpenAI may not have done it intentionally. His post includes no response from OpenAI. Without the tag, a visit may show up under Direct, and ChatGPT’s part in it becomes invisible in the report.

What Did the Data Show?

Source What they reported Where it comes from
Cedric Huesler (Adobe) On about 500 pages where ChatGPT drove 5% or more of visits, comparing October 9 to 13 with the week before: ChatGPT down about 31,000 visits a day, Direct up about 26,000 a day, search down 7%. Analysis shared on LinkedIn; four days of sampled data
Profound Answers with at least one tagged source link fell from about 98% on October 8 to 75% on October 9 and 66% by October 14. Intelligent UI went from 2% of collected answers to about 26% on October 9 and about 35% by October 14. Profound’s own collection of ChatGPT answers
Sébastien Billard A sharp drop in ChatGPT human traffic and in ChatGPT-User bot traffic since October 9, with OAI-SearchBot traffic rising since October 7. His own site data, posted on X

These are individual observations from specific sites and datasets, not OpenAI figures. Profound is an AI visibility analytics company, and its measurements come from its own collected answers.

What Are the Competing Explanations?

Links without a referrer. Huesler says GPT-6 opens links in a way that drops both the UTM tag and the referrer, leaving “no tag and no referrer,” so analytics records the visit as Direct. He supports this with a behavior check: on mobile, the share of new Direct visitors who saw the site’s consent banner rose from 36% to 44%, compared with 55% for ChatGPT visitors, which he reads as a sign the new Direct visitors behave like ChatGPT visitors.

How Intelligent UI renders links. Profound’s assessment is that the decline follows how ChatGPT renders links in Intelligent UI answers. It reports that in follow-up checks, links reached after opening an additional product or information panel still carried tags, while a link displayed directly in an answer could be missing its tag.

The two views are not necessarily in conflict, and both are inferences from outside data. Huesler also noted in a reply that he still saw tags on shopping links, and his post now carries an update that sources told him on October 14 this might be a bug. OpenAI has not confirmed a cause.

What Should Marketers Do Now?

The following are our observations, based on the analysts’ findings:

  • Annotate the break. Mark roughly October 8 to 10 on your ChatGPT referral trend so no one reads a sudden drop or a Direct spike as a performance change. Huesler and Profound both recommend this.
  • Read ChatGPT and Direct together. If your ChatGPT referrals fell and Direct rose on the same landing pages, the visits may have moved rather than disappeared. Direct is noisy, so look for visits that behave like earlier ChatGPT visitors. Our guide to tracking AI referral traffic in GA4 covers the basics of setting this up.
  • Test your own links. Click links in a few ChatGPT answers and check whether the address contains utm_source=chatgpt.com. Results may vary by answer format and link location.
  • Do not change strategy on this number alone. Profound’s advice is to look at visits, conversions, and your visibility and citation trends together. Our guides to AI visibility metrics and tracking brand mentions in ChatGPT explain measures that do not depend on a tag arriving with a visitor.
  • Do not read bot traffic as customer traffic. Billard’s note about ChatGPT-User and OAI-SearchBot is a reminder that crawlers and human visitors behave differently. See our explainer on GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, and ChatGPT-User.

Profound also points out that changing analytics tools cannot recover source information that was never passed along with the visit. Even if tags return, it says, that would improve future reporting but not restore the missing history.

What Is Still Unknown?

  • Whether OpenAI changed the behavior on purpose or whether it is a bug, which Huesler says some sources suggest.
  • Whether OpenAI will restore the tags, and when. Profound says it has not seen official communication on a fix or timing.
  • How much of the lost ChatGPT traffic is now sitting in Direct. Huesler’s data covers four days and only pages where ChatGPT was a large share of visits.
  • Whether the issue affects every link format. Reports mention shopping links and links inside additional panels still carrying tags.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did ChatGPT stop sending traffic to websites?

The evidence reported so far suggests visits may be arriving without identification rather than disappearing. Huesler found Direct visits rising on the same pages where ChatGPT visits fell, though he calls his data early and sampled.

When did the ChatGPT referral drop start?

Profound saw tagged links begin to fall on October 9, Billard reports a drop in ChatGPT human traffic since October 9, and Huesler compared October 9 to 13 with the prior week. GPT-6 began rolling out on October 7.

What is utm_source=chatgpt.com?

It is a tag that can be added to the end of a link so that analytics tools recognize a visit as coming from ChatGPT. Without it, a visit may be filed under Direct.

Has OpenAI confirmed the change?

Not in the reporting we reviewed. Search Engine Roundtable’s post includes no OpenAI response, and Profound says it has seen no official communication. Huesler says sources told him on October 14 it might be a bug.

Can I recover the missing ChatGPT data?

Not directly. Profound notes that source information never passed with a visit cannot be recovered by switching analytics tools. You can annotate the change and use Direct traffic on affected landing pages as a rough proxy.
